The Basics

What is outsourced sales development?

Outsourced sales development means another company runs the top of your sales funnel for you. Abstrakt is a technology-enabled outsourced sales development company that builds predictable B2B revenue pipelines. An outsourced SDR and BDR team is a group of sales development representatives who work the top of your funnel as an extension of your company: researching accounts, prospecting, and booking qualified meetings for your closers. Instead of recruiting, training, and managing reps yourself, you add a team that already has the process, working under your name. Abstrakt provides trained, U.S.-based SDRs, the technology they run on, and the management layer that keeps them productive, all for less than the fully loaded cost of in-house hires.

SDR vs BDR

What is the difference between an SDR and a BDR?

An SDR (sales development representative) usually works inbound interest: form fills, demo requests and calls from buyers who raised a hand. A BDR (business development representative) works outbound: accounts that have never heard of you, opened cold. Both qualify buyers and book meetings for a closer. The difference is where the conversation starts. When the goal is a territory or vertical you have never sold into, that is outsourced business development; when you need remote phone and email capacity next to field reps, it is usually called outsourced inside sales.

RoleStarts withCore work
SDRInbound interestResponding fast to forms, chats and calls, qualifying, routing and booking.
BDRA target account listResearch, cold calls, email, LinkedIn and mail to earn a first conversation, then qualifying, booking and nurturing the not-nows.

Titles get used loosely. We call our reps SDRs, but most of what they do for commercial trades is the outbound BDR job, because nobody fills out a web form asking for a new janitorial contractor. Harring Fire Protection ran both motions at once: an Outbound BDR program on phone, email, LinkedIn and mail, and an inbound SDR program behind a new website. Over the 28-month partnership that produced 195 appointments, 16 closed deals and $200,000 in new business. If inbound is your gap, see inbound lead generation with Inbound SDR.

Day to Day

What does an outsourced SDR team do all day?

Most of the day is on the phone with your target accounts, with email, LinkedIn and mail scheduled around the calls. The rest goes to research, logging and booking. A good SDR day is built around call blocks, not inbox time.

  • Prepares the call block. Reviews which accounts are due, reads notes from earlier conversations and checks intent or trigger data (on Growth) for a reason to call today.
  • Calls. Gatekeepers, voicemails and conversations with decision-makers. How we approach it is in our B2B cold calling framework.
  • Sends the written touches. Email sequences, LinkedIn connections and messages, and direct mail for top accounts on Growth, coordinated so the buyer sees one story.
  • Logs everything. Every dial, email, conversation and objection goes into the CRM and the Results Portal, where you can play the recordings.
  • Qualifies and books. Only meetings that pass Right Company, Right Contact and Right Timing go on your calendar. The qualified appointment page explains each check.
  • Sets the next touch. Every "not now" leaves with a reason and a date, so nurture is a schedule, not a hope.
Management

How are outsourced SDRs managed and coached?

Your SDR is backed by a team: a campaign strategist on messaging and sequences, a data and research team on the list, a quality and qualification team that vets every meeting, and an account manager who runs your reviews. You manage the outcome, not the rep.

  • Trained on your market first. Before dialing, your SDR learns your services, your ideal customer, the buyers who sign and the objections that come up in your trade.
  • QA on every meeting. The quality team checks each booking against the three checks before it reaches you.
  • Coaching from real calls. Calls are recorded, so coaching works from what was actually said, and you can listen to the same recordings.
  • Messaging tuned on evidence. The campaign strategist adjusts targeting and messaging as results come in, with A/B testing on Growth.
  • Reviews with you. Monthly on Foundation; bi-weekly plus a quarterly strategy review on Growth.
  • Coverage if a rep leaves. Turnover is our problem to backfill. The ramp clock does not reset on your side.
The First 90 Days

What do the first 90 days with an outsourced SDR team look like?

The first stretch is setup, the middle is launch and learning, and by the end of the first quarter you should be judging whether meetings are qualified and turning into opportunities. Be wary of any provider that quotes a month-one meeting count before it has seen your market.

01

Setup

ICP and target list built and verified, messaging written and approved by you, CRM connected, your SDR trained on your market. Your team's fast approvals matter most here.

02

Launch and learn

Coordinated first touches go out across channels and the first real conversations happen. Early objections show which segments and messages land, and the list and script get adjusted.

03

Settle into rhythm

A steady weekly cadence, a growing nurture list with dates attached and your first reviews built on portal data. You decide together what to test next.

What you should look for by the end of the quarter: the right accounts being reached, conversations with real decision-makers, booked meetings that pass the three checks and your reps reporting second meetings or proposal requests. Revenue arrives on your normal sales cycle, which for project work can run well past 90 days. The full sequence is on our process.

From our sales center

How many dials does it take an SDR to book a meeting?

Across 3,140,107 calls in commercial service verticals, Abstrakt's SDRs set 25,151 appointments: about 125 dials per appointment. It ranges from 78 dials in commercial fire protection to 169 in LED lighting, and the prospect's title matters as much as the industry. See the full benchmarks by trade, industry and title.

That is the real job of sales development: steady, high-volume activity every working day, through every season. It is a lot of work, and it is the first thing that slips when your team gets busy. We do it every day, and we love it, so your team can focus on selling.

When to Build

When does an in-house SDR team make more sense?

Build in-house when outbound already works and is written down, a manager has time to coach every week and you plan to grow sales development as a long-term team. Without those, an in-house hire tends to underperform regardless of talent.

  • Your playbook is proven. ICP, talk track and cadence are documented and producing meetings. A new hire can run a known play.
  • You have a coach. Someone reviews calls and runs one-on-ones every week, not when there is time.
  • The role is a talent pipeline. You want SDRs who grow into closers or account managers inside your company.
  • The rep has other jobs. If the seat also handles inbound, quoting support or account care, a focused outbound program is not the same job.

Many companies do both: an outsourced team opens a new territory while the in-house team works the core, or proves the playbook before you hire against it. Schena Roofing outsourced because qualified salespeople were nearly impossible to hire in a tight labor market. Century Facility Services faced the build-or-buy call when it lost a sales rep, and chose to outsource the function. If you mainly want booked meetings rather than a team, appointment setting is the more direct place to start.

Questions, Answered

Outsourced SDR & BDR FAQ

What is the difference between SDR outsourcing and appointment setting?+

Appointment setting is the outcome: qualified meetings on your calendar. SDR outsourcing is the team and process that produces it: account research, list building, multi-channel outreach, qualification and reporting. At Abstrakt they are one program: a dedicated outsourced SDR, measured by the qualified appointments it books.

What does an outsourced SDR and BDR team do?+

It works as an extension of your sales team: sales development reps who prospect and book qualified meetings for your closers, with the process, technology and management that keep them productive.

What is the difference between an SDR and a BDR?+

SDRs (sales development reps) typically work inbound interest, while BDRs (business development reps) prospect outbound into new accounts. Our teams cover both motions, and most commercial trades programs are mainly outbound.

Is outsourcing SDRs cheaper than hiring?+

For most companies, yes, once you count every category: salary, taxes, benefits, recruiting, training, management, data, dialer, CRM, email infrastructure and turnover. Price those for your company and compare the annual total with a flat program fee.

Are the reps based in the U.S.?+

Yes. Our SDRs are U.S.-based and trained on your market before they dial.

Will the SDR work only on my account?+

Your SDR is dedicated to your program. On Foundation that is 50% of the SDR's capacity, on Growth it is 100%, and Enterprise programs use a team of 2-6 specialists.

How long does an outsourced SDR team take to ramp?+

Setup comes before any dialing: list, verification, messaging and training. Early conversations then shape the targeting. By the end of the first quarter you should be judging meeting quality and conversion to opportunities.

How many meetings will an outsourced SDR team book?+

It depends on your market and deal size. Enterprise programs are built for 25+ qualified meetings per month. On a strategy call we look at your territory before discussing volume, and you track progress live in the Results Portal.

What happens if my SDR leaves?+

We backfill the seat. Every conversation is logged, so the new rep picks up the account history instead of starting cold, and the ramp clock does not reset on your side.

Can outsourced SDRs work in our CRM?+

Yes. CRM integration is included at every tier, so booked meetings and activity show up where your team already works.

Do you guarantee appointments?+

Yes. Every program carries an appointment guarantee based on your industry; the exact number is in your agreement. If we miss it by the end of the year, we work for free until we hit it. Every meeting that counts toward the number has to pass the three-check standard.
