We at Abstrakt are thrilled to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity St. Louis this year for our 2nd Annual Abstrakt Gives Back Day! Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that aims to help families build and improve places to call home. Habitat believes affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. So, Habitat for Humanity St. Louis operates the same, but it focuses on the Greater St. Louis area.
Habitat St. Louis is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and working towards this goal with a comprehensive program where local families invest their time into building and purchasing their own home. In partnership with homeowners as well as volunteers, Habitat St. Louis seeks to build affordable housing options for people in need in the most cost-effective, sustainable, and environmentally responsible way. Habitat St. Louis has serviced more than 375 families and has brought nearly $60 million in affordable housing development to the metro area. That is some incredible community growth!
Habitat St. Louis has been building St. Louis since 1987 for both city and county. The homes built aim to be attractive, safe, affordable, and sustainable. From design to the dedication of the house, volunteer labor is used throughout the whole build process. Every home varies in size and style, but are designed to meet the needs of the partner families and respect and complement the architectural integrity of the existing community. Typically, the home ranges from 1,200 to 1,500 square feet and will feature 3-4 bedrooms and 1-2 bathrooms. Each home generally has an unfinished basement and somewhere to park a car. From 2008-2016, all new homes were built to LEED platinum standards. In 2017, Habitat St. Louis began participating in DOE Zero Energy Ready Home National Program, which combines standards of ENERGY STAR Homes with proven Building America innovations and best practices.
Volunteers from Abstrakt are excited to spend their day building one of these homes for a family in need. It is so amazing what Habitat St. Louis is doing for our community, and we can’t wait to grow our St. Louis community alongside Habitat workers!
