Social Media Mistakes to Avoid

Anyone can take a pencil to paper and draw something, but not everyone can draw something great. Social media works the same way – it takes time and skill to execute it effectively. It is important to put in the effort to have a quality social media presence.

Here are some common mistakes to avoid when using social media for a business:

Not measuring ROI. When you go fishing, you try out multiple forms of bait to see what the fish are biting on. In social media, it is important to do the same thing. You need to see what content your audience is connecting with and engaging with the most. How do you measure the effectiveness of your content? Analytics. You can get analytics several ways: Facebook offers a free analytics tool to see the effectiveness of your content, Google Analytics helps you see how traffic is converting on your website, and more powerful tools like help you interpret how consumers are reacting to your content. By interpreting these results correctly, you can more effectively engage your audience.

You don’t coordinate with other departments. Social media shouldn’t be viewed as a standalone marketing medium. Social media is most effective when it is combined with the efforts of other departments.  Coordinate your social media efforts with your email marketing team, advertising team, branding team, and any other various departments that could benefit from social media integration. Creating great content that gets put out across multiple platforms helps drive traffic to your website, build your brand’s image, and increase your sales.

Not paying attention to the competition. Chances are your business has competition. Competition is a great thing for consumers, but it also can be good for you too. Wise companies keep an eye on their competition.  While copying EXACTLY what they are doing is not a good idea, studying them and seeing what has and what hasn’t worked for them is a great way to avoid wasting time on ideas that don’t work.  Also, identify key influencer in your industry. See what they are talking about and see what kind of conversations they are having. Interact with influencers and try to involve them in various social media programs.  All of this interaction will help establish your authority in your industry.

You’re the star of the show. How do your conversations with your friends go? If all you talked about was yourself, would you have very many friends?  Take time to listen to you social media following’s needs and address any problems they have. It is important that you take the time to post content that is useful to your target audience and that shows you care about them. Also, do not post too much – if people feel like they are constantly seeing content from you, they will begin to ignore you.
