Through The Eyes of an Intern: Paige Salthouse

On June 2, 2017, I stepped off the elevator on the 2nd floor of Abstrakt Marketing Group. I was so excited yet nervous to start my marketing internship with Melanie Clark as I was not sure what to expect. All my nerves and worries quickly went away as I saw Mary Goetz welcoming me in with a big smile and gift bag.  Little did I know at the time, Mary would quickly become my work “Mom.”

There are many wonderful things about Abstrakt but my top two favorites have to be the people and the culture. The Abstrakters of second floor took me in with open arms and made me feel right at home this summer.  I cannot say enough good things about the people here. I always wondered what it would be like to have a “desk job,” and I have to say, with these people by your side it is pretty amazing! You have…

  • “The Johns”(accounting team) who are Abstrakt’s accounting gurus – always telling jokes
  • Doug, who is a man of few words but more or less an IT god
  • Mary (office manager) the company mom who would do anything for anyone
  • Melanie (Sr. Director of Marketing) who is fun, spunky and the kind who knows everything under the sun about marketing
  • Mike (VP of Finance) who is friendly and an amazing baker. Also, who, every time I ask for the company credit card I feel like I am asking my dad for money
  • Paige(receptionist)who is down to earth has been an all-around amazing friend
  • Kim (Jr. Art Director) who is a sweet designing perfectionist
  • Leo(Facilities manager) who will have you laughing all day
  • Jacque (Payroll manager) who always has a smile on her face, candy on her desk and endless hilarious stories.

These people have helped make my first internship more than I could have ever imagined.

How many people can honestly say they look forward to waking up at 6:30 A.M. for their job? I am fortunate enough to say I am. One of the reasons why I enjoy coming into work so much is because the culture here is great. From company meetings with chanting and singing, drink cart Friday, Give Back Day, morning breakfasts, pizza parties, quarterly parties, holiday parties, team outings and Food Truck Friday – there is always something fun and exciting going on here at Abstrakt. It is no surprise that the culture at Abstrakt is great because they people who work here are nothing short of amazing.

Working alongside Melanie Clark, Senior Director of Marketing, has been a very fun and insightful learning experience. I was astonished at how much she tackles each day, and couldn’t wait to jump right in there with her. Melanie is extremely knowledgeable about all the different departments here at Abstrakt, so I was fortunate enough to get a little taste of everything this summer.

During my internship I oversaw weekly content creation for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter and Ad development for social media marketing. I also got to help with search engine optimization when it came to keyword research and reporting. One of my favorite parts was helping with the philanthropic event planning, organization and promotion. I got to lend a hand in finding charity partners, team communications, employee registrations and assignments and catering management. Corporate event management is another new skill I learned while at my internship. I assisted in planning company meetings and working on presentation development. I also got to help organize and promote corporate happy hours which was always fun. I met a lot of the wonderful people at Abstrakt while doing all of this. Finally, I learned a lot about web development from content creation such as blogs, articles and company pages, to design strategy, site enhancements and SEO optimization. I am very grateful to Melanie for the chance to learn so many new skills under her supervision in just 2 ½ short months.  Melanie is a perfect example of the type of employee I hope to be some day, so I truly feel like I have learned from the best!

My favorite project I got to work on this summer was helping put together the first Abstrakt Gives Back Day. The Give Back Day took an immense amount of planning, so it was neat to see all of my hard work come together in one great day. I am lucky to work for a company who cares about bettering the community around us. Abstrakt as a unit was able to help 19 non-profit organizations, and this experience alone is one I will remember for a lifetime.

I look forward to taking my new skills and experiences with me whether life takes me. I am proud to say that I had a marketing internship with one of the #1 places to work! I feel confident with the skills I have learned while here at Abstrakt that I could tackle any task thrown my way.
