Abstrakt is eager to send a group of volunteers to the Ronald McDonald House for the 2nd annual Abstrakt Gives Back Day. The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis is to provide comfort, care and a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children. Their objective is to enable families to practice family-centered care by providing the families with all the basic comforts of home. Ronald McDonald incorporates their core values: acceptance, accountability, hospitality, integrity, and stewardship to better serve their mission.
The original Ronald McDonald House first opened their St. Louis home in 1981 and since then has served over 40,000 families from all over the U.S. and the globe.
One of the exciting parts about The Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis is that they have a dog who spends her days providing comfort to seriously ill children. She is an Australian Labradoodle and specially trained therapy dog named Frankie. Her title is “Chief Pawsitivity Officer.” Awwwww. How cute, right?!
The Ronald Mcdonald House is known for being a home away from home for many families who have a child in the hospital. This allows families to stay together and be cared for while being in close proximity to nearby hospitals. Some of the amenities the Ronald McDonald House can provide for families are bedrooms and bathrooms, kitchen and laundry facilities, TV rooms, playrooms, and limited transportation. The organization also has Ronald McDonald Family Rooms located inside three St. Louis pediatric hospitals that serve as an oasis for families to have comfort and care close to their child’s hospital room.
In order to be a patient receiving treatment at the Ronald McDonald House, the patient must be 18 years old or younger. Their home residence must be a minimum of 50 miles from St. Louis. No family is ever turned away from staying at the house if they cannot make any type of payment or donation. Families are only asked to make a $15 donation per night.
Ronald McDonald is always kindly accepting donations and volunteers and has a running wish list in order to keep their family rooms running as a “home.” They also allow volunteers to host a third party fundraiser in order to help them raise money. More information about getting involved with the Ronald McDonald House can be found here.
