Retweeting Your Way Into Consumers Hearts

retweetWe’ve already talked about the importance of using Twitter to build your business. Today we’re talking about an effective social media strategy for Twitter – retweeting. Twitter isn’t just for promoting yourself or responding to a customer concern – it’s also about building relationships with consumers.

A retweet is defined as “a reposted or forwarded message on Twitter.” (Yes, retweet is actually in the dictionary.) It is an important element and vital to Twitter. The goal of your business’ account should be to produce content that will encourage others to retweet you; however, you should also be engaging consumers talking about you/mentioning you.

Why is retweeting so important? Because it helps build relationships. Celebrities have harnessed this concept to build relationships with their fans. Every Thursday, Owl City encourages his fans to tweet him using a certain hashtag. He retweets the tweets he likes the most. This not only gets more people talking about him, but also builds relationships with his fans.

A business isn’t too different from a celebrity  Hobby Lobby and Taco Bell represent two companies who stand out among a crowded field of tweeters. Hobby Lobby excels in this facet of content sharing, constantly engaging people who don’t even mention the company’s Twitter handle. (The “@” name for you noobs out there.) Taco Bell, on the other hand, retweets a lot of consumers who engage them, which has started a creative boon for their fan base. Whether it is a funny Vine of someone being excited about Taco Bell or someone using Taco Bell in asking someone to a dance, Taco Bell’s interaction with fans has caused people to gain trust and increase interest in the brand.

One important note: be cautious when retweeting others’ content. Someone whose Twitter handle, display name, or picture that could be offensive to someone should be avoided, no matter how awesome their tweet is.
